I’m Kathleen

I’m an Instructional Designer

I begin with an accessible design approach that I have adapted over time. It incorporates what learners need from the experience against the outcome requirements. The strategy is sequential from subject research to the evaluation components. Demonstrating this process is The Instructional Design Evaluation Rubric. I use this when designing a learning product whether for myself or with partners.

  • 1. Identify Problem: Define the core performance gap backed by data.
  • 2. Determine Approach: Select the right-sized format (Learning, Job Aid, or Email).
  • 3. Define End Result: Specify concrete, observable learner behaviors.
  • 4. Design for Access: Integrate WCAG/ADA compliance and assistive technology upfront.
  • 5. Clarify Objectives: Align goals directly with the desired end result.
  • 6. Research Subject: Limit content strictly to what performance requires.
  • 7. Build Practice & Checks: Create real-world practice opportunities.
  • 8. Incorporate Evaluation: Plan formative and summative checks to verify problem resolution.

Each step is evaluated on a 3-level scale: Meets (3), Partly Meets (2), and Not Yet (1).
